Have you ever wanted to yell at someone for acting inappropriate in front of a small child? If you have, that is reasonable. Misbehaving in front of small children is an example of something you should not do when being socially responsible. Being socially responsible could be defined as doing your duty as a citizen. This may include common courtesy, sticking up for your friends, and yourself, voting, and many more. In this paper you will be indulged into what in means to be socially responsible as well as some practical applications.

Being socially responsible is a good way to become a better person and satisfy the unwritten rules of being a citizen. One way to be socially responsible is by using common courtesy. When walking through a door, always hold the door open for the next person coming through. This will take almost no time, and doing a good deed is always good for karma. Another example of using common courtesy is picking up after yourself. Imagine this; you into a fast food restaurant to get a drink, and accidently knock over the stack of cups. Kindly bend over, pick them up and put them back where they belong. Doing that takes less than five minutes, and you save someone else the trouble of picking them up, and it was an accident anyway. Where these deeds of common courtesy are small, they add up to good character and help accomplish your obligation to be socially responsible.

Socially responsibility also includes sticking up for your friends. When gathering with friends, if someone is being hassled, stick up for them! If you were in their position and someone was getting on your case about your ugly t-shirt, per say, you would want someone to stick up for you right?  It is all about being socially responsible. You need to fulfill your obligation to be a good person. You would not go around belittling someone yourself, so why is letting someone else do it any better?

In the United States of America we are given many rights. One of those rights is the right to speech. With this right we are given the ability and privilege to vote. Voting is another act that a citizen should participate in to be socially responsible. Where as voting isn’t required by law, it is essential to using your freedom of speech to let known what you think. People vote to elect school officials that decide what school children will eat for lunch, mayors to decided where to build a new hospital, and the president of the United States who will make the decisions when our country is at war. When you vote, no matter who you are voting for, and into what office, you are letting your voice be known. How many times have you heard parents, teachers and other adults complain about an elected official?  Possibly ask these people if they even voted. According statics 40% of the people capable to vote, did not vote in the 2004 presidential election. Think about that.

Being socially responsible may sound like a pain, but if you and everyone else are engaging in being socially responsible the world will be a better place. Next time when walking through a door, hold the door open, and maybe someone will pay back the favor someday. If your friend is being picked on, say something. When in their situation, you would want someone to stand up for you.  Try to remember the golden rule; “Treat others the way you would like to be treated!” Become involved with the community and become socially responsible! One day, you might thank yourself!
