McDermott High

McDermott High

A Story by Adrienne

McDermott High was known for its star basketball team, its Applied Arts building, its award winning academic achievers and its cliques. Though everyone was regardd as proper, content and relaxed, students suffering the secretive wars would beg to differ. Whispered insults and spoken lies flew throughout every class of McDermott High. Teens of one sort packed together with more of their sort to grow into groups that would not accept any other way of life, let alone any other way of highschool survival strategy.

Kelly Thomas, head of cheerleading squad, leader of student body and guru of cliques knew that to be noticed, liked and better yet idolized she had to stand out. And with flying colors, she did. Every oily-faced, pubescent teenage boy longed to speak to, to touch or even to smell Kelly Thomas. Although she was adored by many, she was envied by most. Accounts of attempted humiliation focused on Kelly were very constant. Somewhere on campus, sometime in the day, someone was sketching plans for an egg attack or a wardrobe malfunction. No one succeeded though, someone as popular as Kelly always had someone looking out for her precious blonde locks and her sharp brown eyes.

It was June. Not only was school nearing its annual end but more importantly Kelly's birthday was approaching. Kelly's clueless mother Jan Thomas had discretely emailed 87 of Kelly's so called "friends" --FRIDAY JUNE 17th KELLY'S 17th BIRTHDAY BASH! INVITE ANYONE BUT SHHH! DON'T LET THE BIRTHDAY GIRL KNOW- ITS A SURPRISE!-- Word was out and the secret buzzed. Nearly everyone would be attending. Though as expected, some cliques wouldnt even hear the word. As of June 15th everyone had prepared for the party- that is everyone except Kelly Thomas and a few chess club members.

Darnell Reid was one of those specific people who was oblivious to Kelly's birthday. Darnell sported a greasy shag hair cut and wore the same faded cargo pants everyday. He was captain of his own domain: McDermott High Chess Club. He spent lunches in class and his pale scrawny arms could determine that simply.

June 16th rolled around quickly. Kelly was at her weekly CheerMeet and was surprised to see only two other members there. It shocked her and she thought to herself " who would DARE skip CheerMeet?! " After the two other members left early due to unnexpected family emergencies Kelly stayed at the school to finish up a latte.

It was 7pm, Kelly's house was filled wall to wall wth sweaty, anxious teenagers. Balloons were scattered in all areas of the big family room. Pink, pink and pink streamers and decor! Somebody heard a car door slam outside and then another. The room hushed quiet. Everyone was focused on supplying the grandest surprise ever. Lights were dimmed and breaths were uneven. 3......2.....1.......SURPRISE!!!!!!!

The crown hollered for the entire town to hear. And then a gasp washed over the tens and tens of teens. There standing in the doorway was Kelly Thomas, hands of someone else wrapped around her blonde head of hair. She turned around the second she heard the crowd and reveald...

A very lipstick-faced and dazed Darnell Reid...
