The day I let the dog outA Poem by Adrienne
A scratch at the basement door a dog wimpers, on the floor Just loud enough for me to hear So I get up into second gear Passing the kitchen, passing the hall Passing the big mirror on the wall Eleven steps down, 9 steps to the mat A pat on her head, a pat on her back I grip the doorknob with a pale clammy hand And twist it around and pull like a man Gravel under the door makes a scratchy sound and quickly enough, there runs the hound! Into the yard, I'm watching her run Tail wagging lively, she's mooching for fun I step inside, close the door behind me adjust the mat beneath me to keep it neat and tidy With quickening speed I run up the stairs 1 to 11, In seconds I'm there I pass by the mirror, I pass through the hall I get to the couch and then I stall. Before I can sit, I hear it in the yard My dog loudly barking, my dog yapping hard. And after seconds she's still loud so I march down the stairs, not-so-proud. I unlock the door, open it wide stomp to the yard right to her side get ready to scold her, her tail's gonna hide and then I see what she's looking inside A pot on the lawn, the size of a ball and inside a little black kitten is all. hair standing straight on his small fragile back His little pink nose, the size of a tack I hush the doggy quiet in the pot, I grab inside it lifting out my scared new pet whispering "love, dont you fret" © 2009 Adrienne |
