What NIght Brings

What NIght Brings

A Poem by Mortricia
"

It's one thing to be afraid of the dark. It's another to be afraid of what's in it.

"

Darkness surrounds me

like cold surrounds ice

heart beating faster

once a second; twice

there's a chill in the air

not a window is cracked

just my eyes are open,

my mouth is slacked

fear fills my blood

pulsing through me like mad

the bravery from day

is only something I had

but light is gone now

there's only smothering black

sweat beads at my temples

and pours from my back

I close my eyes for relief

but they open with a snap

the darkness is there, too

suddenly, I hear a "tap"

Is it my imagination?

Am I losing my head?

But wait; what was that?

Just under my bed

Something was crawling

and creeping about

is it after me?

I can hardly doubt

I pull my feet closer

to me under the sheets

still, my heart races;

faster it beats

my eyes dart around

looking for suspicious things

it's always this way;

it's what night brings.

This had some damn good flow and beat. You kept the lines the right length to let them flow one into the other. Darkness and the night is always a good topic, you can mold it and twist it into so many things. It was haunting and full of imagery. Great write.

Hello Playing in Traffic,
I like this and it moves right along even leaving me in mystery at the end. I really appreciate the rhymes in the sentences which a lot of writers do not take the time and thought to work at. I also like mid-sentence rhymes that reflect back and forth from up and below.

The poem you have written speaks about a fearfulness in darkness but there is also a different kind of light in the night that also brings more definition and contrast, which is all but lost in the bright light of daytime.

That is the artist in me speaking about beautiful shadows and moonlight.
