Never Too Soon

Never Too Soon

A Poem by Elias Kovats

When is too soon to say "I love you" ?

People tend to say "it's too soon to say that"

That there's a time line of when you allowed do things

Starting with the first hello, full of mystery and wonder

Leading to the first held hand, a subtle gesture that says "don't go too far"

It's sweet and gentle, but it is more significant than people give it credit

There's hugging, but people do that platonically, so there's never a frown

Or complaint that a hug is too soon

Text messages and snap chat streaks fill the spaces between being together

But those days spent in company are filled with the widest grins and blushing cheeks

The sweetest compliments are given and taken while each plans their own heist

The prize being the other one's heart.

Good byes are filled with wishes for more time, but no protests are made because

Neither can control time, and both are thankful for what little bit they had

But the first kiss will be a mile stone. It will say "stay here with me,

We can just stay in this moment, getting drunk off the taste of our nervousness,

We can let the butterflies in our stomachs out to dance with each other

And flutter around this corner street light

Everything else is in shadow, the uncertainty of the unknown ahead

But I am not afraid of the dark, because I have you to brave it with."

When your blue sky eyes pull me into the clouds

I can't help but thank God for sending me an angel

A woman who not only is a believer in Him, but even inspires me to be a man

After a disputed "enough time" has passed, the answer will be clear

Or so the people say

At this point the man will decide to ask her a question

And the woman will decide her answer before he even asks

At this point both will know they love the other,

Because they had already committed theft of the heart

Both speaking those 3 words in a moment of clarity, long before a ring is even looked at

Both trembling with certainty and uncertainty, hoping the other says it back

And then when they both say "I do" it will be made clear to everyone present that they do

That's how the timeline goes, they say that love is a process, and that you have to build it

But what if I don't have any doubts or questions

What if God gave me a spoiler and I already know who I spend my life with

What if I already love you?
