"I'm Fine"

"I'm Fine"

A Poem by Treble

I walk around with a smile on my face,
saying two words more than any other.
"I'm fine."

I sit on my bed with my last resort in my hand,
and red forms two words on my skin.
"I'm fine."

I stand in front of the class with my notes in front of me,
laughing as my partner cracks a couple jokes.
"I'm fine."

I put my headphones on with a tangled heart,
singing two words I don't believe.
"I'm fine."

I lay underneath a stone with a mind at rest,
and engraved in the stone are two words.
"I'm fine."

I found this a very powerful poem. The phrase is something that I know I have heard and said far too many times but the sudden severity and bluntness of the 2nd and final stanza is hard hitting. The use of metaphors like 'last resort', which I interpreted as a knife I thought were brilliant, especially as it is sadly often dismissed if you are literal, it shows what it represents and I love that it is not shown as the 'easy option'.
