So first thing’s first. Thankyou for reading this!
Absolute legend, love what you’re about.
This is a book about my journeys around the world. I swear the stories here are all true.
Pretty much.
Where do I start though? So many interesting jumping on points hey!
I think though the best one for brevity and interest level is when I sat at the airport gate in Darwin getting ready to fly to Singapore and then, London.
Sitting there, sort of asleep (it was 1am in the morning) brought up some interesting thoughts.
Darwin airport seems so dated was the one that jumped out at me the most. Darwin itself is probably most worth visiting for the airport to see how much it fails as an airport, spoiler alert, it fails fantastically.
Anyway, I’m sat there, falling asleep and I take my obligatory photo to announce to the people of the social media world that I will be flying aboard a steel bird soon to travel to another part of the world.
Things are all going great.
Then I get the weirdest inbox I’ve ever gotten, even weirder than when BBC Earth inboxes me every Friday, bless em.
The first thing I noticed about it was that the sender didn’t have a last name. Just a first name. FISH. It read. Its profile picture was suspect too. It was simply a fish in a pond.
All the message said was:
‘WHEN YOU LAND IN SINGAPORE, VISIT ME, YOU WILL KNOW WHEN YOU SEE ME’.
I raised my eyebrows. Hackers hack for no reason sometimes. Just basic spam.
Well. Who cares. I have a plane to catch.
I boarded the plane. It took off. I had a sleep. It was nice!
When I landed though I turned on my Wi-Fi and I realised I had another message from FISH. I rolled my eyes.
I WILL SEE YOU SOON. It read.
This was a little bit creepy but I shrugged it off because it just seemed too bizarre to seem true.
I started walking through the massive Singapore airport trying to figure out where to catch my connecting flight when I came across a pond in the middle of the airport.
It was beautiful. This is how you do an airport.
But the thing that really got me was the fish that swam in the pond. I double checked my phone, looking from the pond to the phone, phone to the pond. It was the same looking fish as the profile picture of the mysterious FISH sender.
When the fish saw me it turned on its fin gracefully through the water and started swimming towards me. It reached the edge of the pond and jumped up out of the pond, landing with a wet SLAP on the ground.
Instantly it grew legs, arms, and expanded its belly whilst changing color till it was no longer scaly and shiny but a casual tanned brown. I realised I had just watched a fish turn into a person. A young man to be precise. He extended his hand to me.
“Welcome to Singapore Will,” he said, “I’ve been waiting for you, there’s a very important job I need you to do.”
What job? Who/what is this thing/person/fish? Will it interfere with my flight to London?
Has my baggage made it onto my connecting flight?
All questions may be answered on the next installment of ‘Not From Around Here’.
