What People Think

What People Think

A Poem by Kris Tate

They see me not as what I am (nice, fun loving, and a little bossy).
They will never truly see me.
They see a loud mouth braggart (an act).
These "They" see only whom I hang out with and what I wear.

Friends see me as what I am (nice, fun loving, and a little bossy).
Friends will always see me.
Friends see past my brash act, to my love for people.
These "Friends" may not always like me, but at least they see ME.

You managed to capture an entire history of an emotion with a few lines. It's that sharp line between They and Friends (or Us). How friends always seem to like you for just being you, and everyone else always seems to form their judgments based only their immediate perception; which usually ends up being rather shallow (as you point out in your poem). Friends seem to look past the surface and can peer past the daily facades and see into the depths of the real you. It is difficult when you have to walk around wearing a mask, knowing that no one can see past the mask. It's why friends are a treasure, because among your friends, you can have the relief of taking the mask off. Great poem.
