Death Approached Her

Death Approached Her

A Poem by Zapata

She walked through the woods,
Where the blue creek runs,
The flowers turned to face her,
For she was brighter than the sun.

Her dress possessed a yellow hue
That no one had ever seen.
It added to the list of pretty things,
That aren't what they seem.

But her hair was like silk,
Straight down to her toes.
With highlights much like
The freckles on her nose.

She ran to the nearest flower
Before it could run to her
She picked it up, said 1, 2, 3,
So the magic could finally occur.

She closed her eyes
And inhaled deep
The petals to her lips
And then to her teeth.

But she heard a voice
And she turned to look,
Except no one was there,
And the ground beneath her shook.

And all of a sudden
A blanket covered the sky,
And the color changed,
Inside her eyes.

Her hair grew upwards,
Towards her back,
It curled in her scalp,
And turned to a pure black.

Then the flowers withered,
And fell from her hair,
Then everything was still,
And only she was there.

or so she thought...

Death stood before her,
With a tail lined with sorrow.
And all the whispering souls,
Who would never see tomorrow.

Death looked her,
In the eyes.
But to Death's surprise,
She didn't cry.

Death taunted her and mocked her,
Said, "look at me! I am here!"
But the broken beauty stood very still,
And didn't show her fear.

Death got angry,
And turned bright red,
He shrieked and shouted,
And wished he himself was dead!

But then he closed his eyes,
And inhaled deep,
And spoke the words,
He needed to speak.

"Dear flawless beauty,
without death there is no life,
If I don't take your breath,
Your world will lose its light.

You must decide,
Whom you want to save,
But in the end you must agree,
That I should take you to your grave."

She realized she must do this,
To save beauty in itself.
No matter what happens,
She must restore beauty's wealth.

She walked into Death
As a tear dropped from her eye
And as the tears fell,
So did raindrops from the sky.

It was water from the heavens
And it healed the broken land
She snuck a glance just one last time
Before she turned to sand.
