Not This Time

Free verse poem practice or attempt, I think

I know I need it this time.
I can't push anyone else away.
But I remember what happened last time,
How badly I was hurt.
I'm too afraid to love because I'm too afraid to heal.
I can never be with someone else without thinking about him.
I can't compare everyone else to you,
to what I held as utter perfection.
Because then unhappiness will always follow me.
So what if his smile is bigger than yours when you see me?
If he is open, smart, and sensitive?
If he is kind and caring?
But the scars remind me how I can never say yes,
Even though I know I need it this time.
