Silent Sounds

Silent Sounds

A Poem by Llee Hill
"

Inspired by a real event that happened to me. It was a late Friday afternoon and I was sitting on the pavement in the middle of a busy city, exhausted from job hunting and getting rejected each time..

"
Like a restless phantom,
She appeared from nowhere,
shouldering an old bag pack,
and clad in yesterday's clothes.

She sat beside me, and sighed tiredly,
dried tear marks etched
deep into her gaunt face.

Twas none of my business,
besides, I was broke.
But why had she come my way?
Why had she sat next to me?
Surely there must be something i could do.
I paused and thought frantically,
And finally turned towards her.

Her little head was bowed,
And her mind was somewhere else,
far from this world of sorrow.

An ice cream man passed,
and she licked her parched lips.
She looked at him with pleading eyes,
before she sighed and bowed again.
Then a tear dropped to the pavement.

I jumped up and sped towards
the disappearing ice cream man.
I fished the coin that was my bus fare,
and demanded the creamiest vanilla cone.
I knew she would like it.

But when I came back, she was gone.
I checked all corners
but found her not.
Then the ice cream started melting,
but how could I eat it?

Several minutes passed,
leaving me jaded and confused,
by now, holding just a cone,
and wondering all the while,
How I was going to get home.

Perhaps your kindness gave her hope and redeemed humanity. It’s one of life’s greatest paradoxes that we receive from giving. Though you spent your bus fare for her, you still had a place to go home. Your kindness shines through as a lesson to all. Great story!
