Black DogA Poem by Toni Prehoda Kahlerfrom the soul of a child
Black Dog
Black dog, Your thin, gray teats Swing left and right As you pace down the middle of our road. Your eyes say hunger, ravenous, puppies,
I hear your eyes, dog.
I get three burgers, The fake meaty ones, Soft and red and wrapped in cellophane, I throw them to you And hold my breath still. I watch you sneak up our driveway and gulp.
Strange starving thing, I meet you here each day the same: Three burgers for your eyes--- Until mother said no.
Black dog, You broke my heart. © 2008 Toni Prehoda KahlerAuthor's Note
