Black Dog

Black Dog

A Poem by Toni Prehoda Kahler
"

from the soul of a child

"

              Black Dog

Black dog,

Your thin, gray teats

Swing left and right

As you pace down the middle of our road.

Your eyes say hunger, ravenous, puppies,

I hear your eyes, dog.

I get three burgers,

The fake meaty ones,

Soft and red and wrapped in cellophane,

I throw them to you

And hold my breath still.

I watch you sneak up our driveway and gulp.

Strange starving thing,

I meet you here each day the same:

Three burgers for your eyes---

Until mother said no.

Black dog,

You broke my heart.

this made me recall with maudlin and sick feelings an abandoned kitten which i tried to save too late. he tried, too. for all of its beauty and magic, life is sometimes tragic isn't it? anyhow, i liked very much how you conveyed the image and emotion of this reality when you wrote this piece.

how much you cared about a dog that wasnt even your own, and you cared because you felt for the dog, amazing job, i love teh feeling of caring. great.

Such a sad poem. It hurts so much to see animals in pain, especially when you're young. Reminds of a dog I was trying to save as a child.

Wow, this hurt. We are alike in that manner where animals are concerned. I hate their suffering. You have conveyed it well.

I had a black dog once...she saved me. She came bounding up our street straight from the hand of Heaven and turned out to be one of the greatest teachers I ever had. Teachers come in all shapes and forms and they arrive with perfect timing.
