The EmbraceA Poem by Toni Prehoda Kahlera sonnet written from the point of view of a woman overwhemed by the guilt of her affair, in contrast with her lover.
The Embrace
I call it lust, this panting heat between Our lips, this urgent bulging god that rules Our loins. You swear that Cupid's bow, unseen, Has hurled its point into our tryst. Damp pools Still stain the sheet were honor died, clear beads Of sweat still ride your chest. Love near, I ask? Some demon howling, feeding on these deeds Is more like truth. I dress in haste; you bask Spread-eagle on the bed, you laugh. Our sin Has pierced clear through my soul: my first child's face Rises before me like a foal's, her thin Hair tossed before her eyes. Gold ring in place You go, with lathered skin and scented breath, But I, I walk away embraced by death. © 2008 Toni Prehoda KahlerAuthor's Note
