To Breath the Air Surrounding a Certain Soul

To Breath the Air Surrounding a Certain Soul

A Poem by E. A. Lide
"

Imagine waking with the woman you always dreamt you'd sleep beside.

"

You open your eyes to see her laying beside you-

there, beneath the sheets, where she has never been before.

Her body is warm, and so is your heart,

her sleeping form placing a gentle smile upon your lips.

With palms that used to sweat in her presence,

you lift a hand to caress her face- for you are now comfortable with her.

This is everything you ever wanted,

and so much more.

It is the middle of the night, and you breath in her scent

of sawdust and strawberries and your perfume.

Her hair still smells like the bonfire, and the forest,

and you remember the things you said to each other there.

Your breathing is neither nervous nor heavy,

for you are beside your love where you have never been before.

This is everything you ever wanted,

and so much more.

You consider waking her, for the benefit of seeing her green eyes

contrasting with her fiery hair and touch, but you do not.

For this is a moment you do not want to miss,

or lose, or ruin and forget- you are happy, finally, and content.

You sigh, blink slowly and relish in her presence-

a sweet and homely satisfaction which you've yearned for for so long.

When you open your eyes,

she is gone.

This is very nicely written. The picture, and the contentment of the moment, are beautifully painted. Then the stark, painful clang of the reality that she is gone. What a surprising and upsetting final stanza. But life is so often this way.

Wonderful!

Best regards,

Rick
