Dreams From Yesterday's Memories

Dreams From Yesterday's Memories

I dreamed of Germany last night.
I was in the kitchen, baking bread with my Mama while she hung the Nazi flag in her window.

I dreamed of the sirens last night.
My mama scooped me up and led me down to the shelter of the basement. She held me while I cried.

I dreamed of Hitler last night.
Herr Hitler. The Fuhrer. His thunderbolts of words, manipulating those like a puppet. Crushing the Jews in his mighty fist without a twitch of his small, square mustache.

I dreamed of bombs last night.
The awful screeching noises. Screaming. Crying. I always hold my mama closer.

I dreamed of knowing my papa was dead last night.
   He was in the war.

I dreamed of being a Nazi soldier last night.
   Big boots. Marching. Killing.

I dreamed of being a Jew last night.
   Starving. Dying. Hating.

I dreamed of the fires last night.
  The Germans loved to burn.

I dreamed of the night ending.

I dreamed of the one last look at my precious Germany last night.
And I how I never wanted to see it again.
