waterbird

waterbird

A Poem by Olivia H.

Flap your wings
as fast as you can,
because one day you’ll fall
and that is the end.
Sing your song
to the opening skies,
for so many feet above the trees
will be your demise.
The sun fills your eyes,
but it is blinding.
The cold air fills your lungs,
but soon you’ll be finding
that it’s drying them up
bit by bit
one day they’ll crack
and i won’t do so much as spit.
So fall, fall into the ocean below
drown yourself in freezing sorrow
the sunlight ripples and fades above
and it’s warmth you’re dreaming of.
It’s too late now, my little bird
on the ground you should have stayed
but it’s too late for second chances
the last move of the game
has already been played.
So float, float onto the sand below
and kiss the sky goodbye.
There’s no way you’re leaving now
no time again will you ever fly.
