AwakeningA Chapter by Toni-Lynn BenoitRay wakes up and realizes how much time has passed. He goes to find Katie, but is he in for a surprise? Also, who is this person that Katie is talking to?"Ray! Wake up!" Ray shot up at the sound of his mother's voice. He looked straight ahead and saw his mother looking at him, holding the empty beer bottle in her hand. "Would you care to explain to me what this is doing next to you?" Ray rubbed his eyes and tried to concentrate. He looked at the clock and saw that it was now three o'clock in the afternoon.
"I have been asleep for four hours?!" He grabbed his phone and looked at the screen. Four missed calls, three voicemails, and seven text messages from Katie showed up. He couldn't believe that he had been asleep this long. Ray got up, grabbed his car keys, and headed for the door. His mother stopped him before he reached the door.
"Ray, where do you think you are going? You still haven't answered my question. Why is there an empty beer bottle on the table?" He looked at his mom and simply shrugged his shoulders. He couldn’t remember the reason for drinking the beer. After Adam left he just felt so overwhelmed. The only thing he could think to do was grab a beer and drink.
"Mom, I have to go find Katie. I fell asleep and missed her calls. Can we talk about this later?" Ray looked at his mom pleadingly. She threw her hands up in the air and admitted defeat.
"Fine, Ray. But we will talk about this when your father gets home." Ray nodded his head in agreement and walked out the door. He ran to his car, opened the door, and placed the key in the ignition. He wasted no time in getting on the road and going into town. He had to find Katie. He didn't want anything bad to happen to her.
Ray drove by the diner that he had last seen her at and started looking around for her. He pulled his phone out and called Katie. It rang once...twice...three times...then voice-mail. "She didn't answer her phone? She always answers her phone. Even when she is mad at me, she will answer her phone," thought Ray. He was starting to get worried. He tried calling her again. Once...twice...three times...voice-mail again. "What is going on?" Ray thought. He looked up from his phone and saw Katie sitting in front of the library. He pulled up to the sidewalk and was about to get out, when all of a sudden he saw another person there with her. He tried to figure out who it was, but he couldn't make out a face. He rolled the window down and called out to her, "Katie!" She looked up at Ray and he could see tears in her eyes. He got out of the car and headed towards her. He pulled her into his arms and held onto her tight. "Katie, what's wrong? What happened?" Ray turned to look at the person standing next to her. "Adam?"
Adam looked at Ray and then back at Katie. "Hey, Ray." Ray was confused. What was Adam doing talking to Katie? Ray didn't even know that they knew each other.
"What are you doing here, Adam? I thought you had somewhere to be." Katie looked at Ray and then back at Adam.
"Wait, you two know each other?" said Katie. Ray stood away from them. He looked at Katie's face and he could tell that she was hiding something. Adam looked at Ray and broke the silence.
"Ray's right. I do have somewhere that I need to be. It was good seeing you Katie. Bye again, Ray." Adam walked away from the pair and left them standing there, alone. Katie started walking towards Ray's house. Ray caught up to her and started talking, but she acted as if she didn't hear him.
"Katie, come on. The car is right over there. Let me take you home." He pulled her towards him, but she just pushed him away. Ray was confused. He had never seen Katie like this. She was always sweet and caring. She never pushed anyone away. "Katie, what's wrong? What happened?"
Katie turned around and started crying. "Suddenly you care?! Where were you when I called you four times?! I needed you, and you weren't there. Just leave me alone." She ran all the way to the park nearby. She didn't look back to see if Ray was following her and to be honest she didn't care. Once she reached the park, she stopped and sat on a bench. She was out of breath and tired.
Katie was having a hard time processing all that had happened today. First, she went to the doctor's clinic. Then, she got into a fight with her mom. The one event that shook her up the most was running into Adam. She hadn't seen Adam in a couple of years. And that was understood to be the last time they saw each other.

Katie was fifteen years old and had just started high school. She was so nervous and scared for her first day. She didn't know anyone and she had no idea what to expect. As she walked through the doors all she saw were seas of people. Everywhere she looked there were people. In her mind she thought, "How am I supposed to make friends with this many people?" She found her locker and started placing her stuff inside. As she closed her locker and headed for her first class, she ran into what felt like a brick wall and dropped all of her books. After she recovered, she looked up to see a very handsome guy in front of her. He was tall, handsome, and very mysterious. And Katie was smitten.
"You should be careful with who you run into. There are guys a lot bigger than me here and next time you could really hurt yourself." He picked up her books and reached his hand out to her so she could get up. Once she was standing, she realized just how tall he was. "You must be new here," said this mysterious guy.
"And how do you
figure that?" said Katie. She tried to act cool and mature, but she ended
up looking like the exact opposite. He laughed and flashed a million dollar
smile.
"I'm Katie. And yes I am new. This is my first year here." Katie continued looking down at her shoes. His eyes were gorgeous and she could get lost in them with just one look.
"Well then, allow me to be the first to welcome you to East High." Adam picked her face up so that she was looking directly at him. She melted instantly once she saw those gorgeous green eyes. "Well, I better get to class. It was nice running into you." He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and was on his way.
"Nice running into you too!" she called after him, even though she knew he couldn't hear her. The rest of the day, Katie looked around for Adam all day. She wanted to see those beautiful eyes every second of every day.
As time went on, Katie and Adam hung out on occasion, which eventually turned into every weekend. Katie could tell that she was falling for Adam, but she was afraid because of her parents. She knew that they wouldn't like the idea of her liking a senior in high school. But none of that mattered. What happened next, change her opinion of him forever.
Katie and Adam were hanging out at the park one night when all of a sudden Adam's arm went a little lower then normal. He then proceeded to grab her face and his lips next to hers. Katie's heart was pounding. She didn't know what she was supposed to. So she just sat there. Adam figured that Katie was giving him the "go-ahead" and he kissed her on the lips. When he pulled back, he saw a confused Katie in front of him. Instead of asking if she was okay, he just kept going.
Katie was starting to feel overwhelmed, so she tried to push him away. But Adam, wouldn't stop. He just kept going, and he kept pushing the boundaries. "Adam, can you please stop…?" Katie tried to sound calm, but deep inside she wanted to scream.
"Katie, come one. You and I both know that you are into me. So why not just give in to your urges? I know I will." Adam tried to look seductively at her, hoping that it would change her mind.
"Adam, I do like you! I just don't think I am ready for all this just yet." Katie tried to move away from Adam. But he wasn't going to let that happen. He pulled her closer so that she was directly on his lap.
"Katie, I don't care if you are ready. I want this and I want you. And I am going to have you whether you want it or not!" Adam started to get aggressive with her. He was pulling hair and pulling at clothes. Katie started screaming and trying to fight him. But Adam was just to strong for her. She had no choice but to surrender.
Katie went home and felt so dirty and gross. She couldn't believe what had just happened. Every time she thought about it, she wanted to cry. She went to bed that night with terrible flashbacks of what had happened. It was an ever present thought in her mind and it wouldn't go away.
The next day at school, she saw Adam and she continued walking the other way. She didn't want to speak to him ever again. He had taken the one thing that meant the most to her. And she could never get it back. She went to her locker and went about her business. Then all of a sudden she felt a hand on her back. She jumped back instantly and shuddered when she saw who the culprit was. "Hey there, pretty lady," said Adam.
"Go away, Adam." She said it quietly so she wouldn't cause a scene. She didn't want everyone to know what had happened, even though she knew that he would probably tell everyone anyways. "I don't want to talk to you anymore. So please, just leave me alone." She started walking away from him, but he just pulled her arm and brought her to his chest.
"You don't want
to do that. I can make the rest of your life here miserable. Just try me."
Katie knew that she shouldn't be dealing with this. She moved her mouth close
to his ear and whispered, "You do that, and I'll tell the cops that you
raped me." She moved away from him and pulled her arm away. She waited to
see if he would try anything. When he didn't, she turned and walked the other
direction.
Katie sat at the park bench and cried at the mere memory of it all. She hated to think about Adam because it was always associated with these horrific memories. She never told anyone what had happened to her. Not even Ray knew. And now that she knew that Ray and Adam were friends, how could she? But she hated keeping this from Ray. If they were going to start a family together and spend their life together, then shouldn't he know everything about her? © 2013 Toni-Lynn BenoitAuthor's Note
