Companionship

Companionship

A Poem by Tobias Søgaard

In my life, bizarre,
I will see many and much
Flowers, rivers, stars.

But I'd rather die
If I should travel alone
With none by my side

• I will see many and much

"Many and such? So someone unknown says they'll see many things in their life? Who doesn't?

In my own life I've seen unspecified things happen, too. So what? Placing mention of that fact on a page doesn't make the result a poem, because the words have meaning only for the author. But, the entire purpose of poetry is to provide the reader with an emotional experience, not talk to them about your own life in terms too general to have context for the reader who doesn't know you.

You have intent for how the words should be taken. But intent never makes it to the page, and without context, for the reader it's a word salad, meaning unknown

Write from your chair, of course. But you need to edit from the seat of a reader who has only the context you supply, and whatever meaning the words suggest to them, based on their life experiences, not your intent.
