WHAT YOU NEVER KNEWA Poem by Tobe OsigweA mocking dirge to a chauvinist
When you left,
You did think that her serene world will rupture; That the tick tock of her clock will stop ticking; Perhaps her fertile soil will freeze and dry up Like a shrivelled, broken harmattan yam; That her smooth glistening skin will blister You did think That she will cease to smile, and lose her dimple Because you ve left with her reason to; That her eyes will be swollen with forlorn tears Like a young lad beaten up by a big bully; That she will misstep and tumble down the staircase You did hope That her joy will sag and seep out Like billowing smoke escaping into dry air; You hoped that she will never find one like you That her spirit will shrink and deflate And tears will be her daily template You did pray That she would keep hoping for your return; Her hunger for you would make her go crazy; That she keeps calling your name in her dreams Like she did every other night before you left That like the Biafra cause, she is a foregone past But you just realised; That you are a bad dream she had woken up from; Your leaving has been a fervent prayer point; That you are like a once sweet, now soured Egusi soup in a lazy wife's abandoned kitchen That you were not really that hot! That awkward moment You wish against wish that its all but a dream. © 2013 Tobe OsigweFeatured Review
