Speak Now

I wonder if you're really as heartless
as you seem to want me to believe,
if you really lack the ability to love and be loved,
or if love is just something you deny yourself
as some pathetic attempt at self-punishment.

I also wonder if maybe, by chance,
you just present yourself to me, exclusively,
as an individual suffering from internal conflict
to take advantage of my God-given caring nature
and the "neediness" you mistakenly perceive me to possess.

See, the truth of the matter is while I do care about you,
and in the course of caring about you I have admittedly
allowed myself to forget this from time to time,
I am actually quite capable of taking care of myself
and am not obligated to indulge you whatsoever.

I choose to show you affection, to show you genuine concern,
and make the extra effort to be mindful of your personal space.
In return, what have you done for me?
How can you so easily appear to be completely aware of me
when I'm standing in front of you and then just as easily
forget I exist when I'm gone from your sight?

I muse over these questions and still I wonder
Will listening to what you don't say, in time, give me the answers
or is your mind as impenetrable as it seems?
I have never declared myself to be the epitome of patience
So if you want me to keep trying, if you want me to be there,
if you're really a soul in desperate need of a savior...
Speak now or forever hold your peace.
