Gary the WormA Story by Travis Kalenborn
Gary was an earthworm from New
Jersey. He wasn’t a big earthworm, or a
small one. He was an average sized
earthworm. His father told him when he
was a larva that if he put his mind to it, he could accomplish anything. He took these words to heart and every day
when he woke up, he dug through the ground to make his father proud. He burrowed and burrowed until his could no
longer eat dirt. He was stuffed! He waited a few hours until he pooped out the
unneeded nutrients and continued burrowing.
Darkness surrounded him in the void of black earth and he wanted to quit
more than ever, but his father’s voice echoed in his brain like a skipping
record. "I must not let him down. I will prove to myself and the world that I
am an earthworm worth remembering." he thought to himself as he chewed. "That my existence is just as important as the
Earthworm King who rules the Mossy Kingdom."
And so
he continued day after day, toiling through the soil with an unflinching
determination. After time other
earthworms saw Gary’s plight and decided to join him in his journey. Where they were going, they did not know,
they just knew that if they kept plugging away, and trying their hardest at
everything they did, eventually good things would happen. Hope above all fueled Gary’s quest, and in
so, his followers which grew by the day.
Weeks, months, years, passed by and Gary’s efforts had earned him a legion
of followers and was appointed a Duke in the Kingdom for his valiance. Mouthful after mouthful, he continued to eat
and s**t dirt until his body was about to collapse from sheer exhaustion. But up from above, a glimmer of light showed
through the void. A single ray passed
though the earth to his earthworm army.
Faster and faster they dug through to the light and it grew with each
passing bite. Soon he reached the entry
point of the light and with one last chomp he stuck his head through and peered
into the other side. As he looked around
everything was upside down and the language on the signs and billboards around
him was one he did not recognize. He had
done it! He had burrowed through the
entire earth and created the first intercontinental worm hole. Soon subway systems were connected and the
pilgrimage to the other end of the world began for the Mossy Kingdom. Today, if it wasn’t for Gary and his undying
spirit, the world would not have the Chinese Earthworm Museum of Tourism, which
unveiled a life-size statue of Gary by the Earthworm King himself! And in the end, no
one was more proud than Gary’s own father.
So next time you step outside on a rainy day and step on an earthworm,
remember that could be one of Gary’s brothers, you b*****d!
