When We Were Only Children

When We Were Only Children

A Poem by Titus McGuire

When we were only children

It was always you and me

But the hands of time

Take away the love

That was never meant to be

Now the winds of time are blowing

And the days start to fly by

Our secrets in

The cool spring rain

Just a child’s lullaby

Now I see you're all grown up

And the dreams just start to fade

Promises made

Promises broken

But your memory will stay

We never made the magic

We never made the love

We never had the real thing

And I never felt your touch

But sometimes-When you're sleeping

If you listen to the wind

You can hear me

Whisper your name

When my dreams come to an end

When we were only children

And tomorrow never came

The promises

Were left to fade

In the early morning rain

Now the winds of change are blowing

And the tears are rushing past

I've got a memory

Of you and me

And a love not built to last

Now I see you're all grown up

And there's nothing I can do

You belong

To someone else

It's no longer me and you

We never made the magic

We never made the love

We never had the real thing

And I never felt your touch

But sometimes-When you're sleeping

If you listen to the wind

You can hear me

Whisper your name

When my dreams come to an end

When we were only children

And our love was young and true

I gave my heart

Right from the start

Always me and...

This was written back in '98 as a song, so keep in mind as you read it that these verses were originally intended as lyrics to be sang to music.

I really like this piece, where u hv created a fascinating mixture of philosophy & life's reality... with the essence of childhood memoirs to adulthood... well written & Touching .. & Congrats fr the new badge ! ..

I like this piece, its sad, but not overly depressing, it almost has a kind of hope to in that the speaker has come to terms with the fact that what was there wasnt meant to be and that the one he loves is not his to love, but he still longs for her. That cannot be helped. This is a wonderful write and i would LOVE to hear it sang, i am sure it sounds as wonderful as a song as it does on the page.

Most of your poetry, (I'm finding) is lyrical, in that it flows and weaves its way down the page.

"But sometimes-When you're sleeping

If you listen to the wind

You can hear me

Whisper your name

When my dreams come to an end."

That was the part that made me look deeper into this poem, past the wistful nostalgia to the pain that is cleverly powdered over with beautiful words. I did indeed like this one!
