The Pretty Side

The Pretty Side

A Poem by Choosing Life
"

This picee is written to challenge myself and others to truly look within. I find that people generally are unwilling to face the pain to be free from it. We deny our right to hurt and those around us.

"

Desert storms don't make for happy endings...

The pleasure principle keeps us searching like nomads

Moving from space to space...

Substance to substance...

Person to person...

Perhaps in need,

Or maybe in denial...

We all want to experience the pretty side of life.

On that excursion, we avoid looking within.

Refusing to touch the painful side of things,

Only wanting to indulge in what is lovely.

Afraid to see...

We close eyes and shun those that bleed openly.

How dare they choose to be naked and uncovered?

Maybe in some ways jealousy takes over,

Because there is a freedom in facing one's own troubles.

So we flinch as one breaks openly.

Wishing to shut them out because their truth

challenges our created existence.

We all want to experience the pretty side of life...

By dancing on the outskirts of the mirror

Afraid to peek inside the places that still scream...

Afraid to glance at the broken memories and feel...

Afraid to view the unmet needs still crying out...

"Touch me here!"

But there are those that claw, as to get so deep...

that they face themselves without blinders,

willing and ready to feel what is considered ugly

so that they can experience the pretty side of life...

Again I think this will read smoothly...with the repetitions of 'the pretty side of life' catching the ear and staying with the audience when they forget everything else they hear...and with that tag in the mind the rest of the poem will stand a good chance of sinking in too.

There is considerable wisdom here and it is very well expressed with these lines catching my eye...

How dare they choose to be naked and uncovered?
Maybe in some ways jealousy takes over,
Because there is a freedom in facing one's own troubles.
So we flinch as one breaks openly.
Wishing to shut them out because their truth
challenges our created existence.

I'd never thought that before. But it seems plain true. I also like the back up idea of dancing on the edge of the mirror, too.

For all representers of your word meaning everything....

that's the conduit we use to get to the Pretty Side of Life.

Dope piece. Per usual.
