Flirtations Die

Flirtations Die

A Poem by Choosing Life
"

The truth of the matter

"

Your mark remains but it burns there
A reminder of how words crumble
And affections grow cold
After first flirtations
Slip into a new person
Or life sucks them dry ….
There remains a heart that grew accustomed
To things that are no more
And honestly probably never were~
So on most days I purposely shut you out.
Short quick comments that keep us distanced,
Always reminding myself that those minutes
Are past tensed and that today is not ours…
My participation is in us no longer exercised.
But your words still lay dormant inside me
Begging to be resurrected.
So I make sure I build walls so high
And so thick that your voice will never bring them back to life….

I like 'life sucks them dry' and the word 'accustomed' seems to denote post infatuation reality. 'past tensed and today is not ours' is a strong line. But the last four lines are the best for me. You don't like the wall, but have to do it to protect yourself.
