Self-Sacrificial

Self-Sacrificial

A Poem by Aly Caine

You said you’d die for me
                        protect me with your life.

I cried.

            I begged.

                        I pleaded.

                                    No!

How could you?

Why would you?

I won’t let you!

My life is nothing without you.

Words you reflected back at me.

Live for me.

            Live for me.

You said you’d die for me

            But no.

No that could never happen.

No force on Heaven, Hell, or Earth
could take you from me.
I will not let them.

I would not let you.

My life is mine to save.
My chances are mine to take,

and I am no damsel.

You will not leave me behind,

            dying in the cold

                        of your absence.

No.

You told me that you’d die for me.

And so to stop you

I died instead.

Powerful piece of writing! Some lines reminded me of Lauryn Hill's song x factor. I loved the ending I think it reflects the strong hold love has on a person's survival instincts; immediately you have this urge to protect the one you love at all costs even if it means you don't survive.. you need to keep the ones you love safe.

I don't think I've heard of that song, but now I'll definitely have to check it out. Thanks so much .. read more
Melodramatic with a great twist at the end, what started out as a sob and sniffle finished off as a tear-soaked handkerchief. Bravo! Clap! Clap!

Emotions running deep. Sacrifice for the sake of love. Well done.

It made me think of Romeo & Juliet, and Garbage's theme song "#1 Crush" to the movie when I was in college...

As noble as the sentiment is, as heroic as it may have seemed in days of yore, it's a cruel and ironic joke to lose that which you love so you can keep living when all you want to live for is their love.

Almost like the back cover summary of a novel, I loved its clarity and unrestraint honesty.

Thank you for sharing!
