Rubicon

Rubicon

A Poem by Tim F*****g McCormack

I have traversed further rivers than this
Bridged mightier,
I have come so far to reach the heart of Rome
To cross the Rubicon
But my feet grow tired here, and I wonder
What if she shuts herself from me?
Am I truly all I have dreamt, marble statued
Memorialized for ages, Caesar
I have come so far.
I am Rome's son, Romulus rejoices in me
but others, others see my frailties as well
Ere Rome wore purple, none would adorn
my shoulders. Rome has often rejoiced
In her farmers, I know not of me,
I have never fortified her walls
What cause have I to believe that I
Caesar may stand before this current
and come forward from to claim her,
for having spilt her blood
with thrust.
Romulus, what would have done,
did you know killing your brother,
crossing that line-
Can I cross the Rubicon?
