safety

safety

A Poem by timcampbell

he begins to drink at half past five
and really starts to feel alive
so, soon he hits the slot machines
through gambling, he's found his safety.

she's always gone, and no one knows
that she's at another man's home
wining and dining with her "husband-to-be"
by cheating, she's found her safety.

she slams the door and turns the key
she's done with sibling rivalry
she's short on cash, but found the stash
in drugs, she's found her safety.

neither of his parents are ever home
so he's always stuck with the newborn
when the crying stops, he's on cut three
through self-mutilation, he's found his safety.

the baby stops and she's asleep
all she needs is a heart to beat
undoubtedly innocent and pure as can be
at two months, this is her safety.
