Spare Change

Spare Change

A Poem by Mauricio Montoya

Spare Change

Please don’t knock on a door unwilling to open

Nor blow wind through a window that remains closed

With the walls that surround it

For I sit inside with a roof above me

And the foundation below me

I am willing to open the door

If the knock is appropriate

Because change

Does not come in the direction in which the wind blows

But from within

I understand your viewpoint on change, but I don't understand the word "spare" in your title. Do we only have a limited amount of change within us and we are not sure how much we have? Sometimes we have the capability of more change than we can ever imagine. How do you determine what is the appropriate "knock?" Sometimes we are forced to accept and change or we continue to sit alone in our shelter, but it is only an existence not really "living." I really appreciated the last two lines, they are very true.

its good to keep them short... Gets to the point quicker.... Good one... The inside (within) is a huge place...

change-we have to look from within
if the knock is appropriate-then we have acknowledged that some knocks are best left unanswered-change has been spared an ending but given a beginning
thank you so for sharing

There is a lot of self-honesty in this poem. Taking notice and being self-aware really stand out here. I like it....

i like this a lot, it articulates a person setting out boundaries and gently vents where the writer is coming from. An assertive wise poem. Nicely penned.
