Chapter 8: Adam's Near DeathA Chapter by LygheaAdam's life is on the line and Destiny is determined to help, despite her pain. Destiny loses hearing again... and Destiny and Adam have their first fight."Adam! No," Destiny cried and screamed. Destiny clinged to Adam. "Ma'm. Let go, please. We'll try our best," one of the paramedics said as they pulled Destiny off of Adam. They put an IV into Adam's arm and an oxygen mask. Luke sat there in shock holding his broken arm. Ben got a concussion and a dislocated nose. Destiny was fine, and so was Mrs. Renders - just a bruised face. They got to the hospital. They were all in Adam's hospital room when the nurse called for Mrs. Renders. "Are you his legal guardian," the nurse started asking questions. "Yes. The little one is his cousin, the girl is his girlfriend, and the other boy is his best friend. The Semi lost control and hit us," Mrs. Renders started tearing up. "Ma'm, your son is in critical condition and we're doing our best but we aren't sure. We think there might be something else wrong. Your son risked his life for his girlfriend, though you know," the nurse stated. "What do you mean," Mrs. Renders asked confused. "Your son, Adam, risked his life for the girl and - " the nurse was interrupted. "Her name is Destiny. And my son was in the middle... Ben dodged the glass, but it also broke towards the middle," Mrs. Renders stated to what she thought had happened. "No. The glass curved and your son caught it for Destiny. He saved it from slitting her throat, even though it hurt him severely. It would've killed her," the nurse finally finished. "What else do you think is wrong?" "We think he might have a disease that isn't helping his conition," the nurse answered Mrs. Renders question quite calmly. Mrs. Renders didn't know what to do.
Adam woke up and told his mom that he was going to be fine. "No, no you're not... Adam, please no - " Mrs. Renders cried out loudly. Destiny started tearing up. She couldn't help it. Mrs. Renders left the room for a minute to think by herself. Adam sat up while groaning from the pain. "Destiny," he spoke out with a sign or relief. "No," Destiny said firmly. "What," Adam asked. "No." "What do you mean 'No', Destiny," Adam was still confused. "No. N.O. No, no, no, no, no, no," Destiny repeated one after the other. "No what," shouted Adam. "No. You can't be hurt, this can't be true, this has to be a dream. I want to go back to that day," Destiny said screaming while tears poured down her beat red, bruised face. "Why? Why would you want to change everything," Adam asked quite sadly. "Because," Destiny started, "then neither of us would be where we are... both hurt fighting for our lives - screwing everything up. Wasting our time," Destiny softly said ask she started a fresh row of tears from her eyes. Adam stood there, not knowing what to say. Destiny rolled out of the room in her wheelchair. She noticed she lost her hearing when her mom called several times and she didn't hear it. She looked at her phone. "7 missed calls," Destiny said to herself. She couldn't hear herself talk. She thought to herself, "Damn it... I wish none of this happened." The nurse greeted her. Destiny pointed to her ear. The nurse started signing to her. "He saved your life." "How," Destiny questioned. "He risked the glass pain for you. If he didn't, you would've had a one in a million chance of living. I know it's hard and a lot to take in, but he loves you enough to risk his life for you," the nurse finished. Destiny looked back towards Adam's room. She bowed her head down and shook her head. "I can't," she sorrowfully told the nurse. The nurse lifted her head up. "Why," she asked. "Because... I don't know what to do with myself. He's helped me through everything and I've given him nothing, then he risks his life for me, and I still offer him nothing." "All he wanted was you. Right here," the nurse pointed to Destiny's heart. Destiny once again looked back at Adam's room. She rolled out the door in the pouring rain. "Destiny." Someone was behind her, trying to get her attention. Destiny felt a tap on her shoulder. She jumped as she turned her wheelchair around. It was Adam's spirit. "Please, only you can save me. Let the doctors know." Adam faded. Destiny woke-up from her dream. "Where's Doctor Redger? I need to find her, NOW!" The nurse looked at her. "Whom's this regarding Dr. Red? For which patient is in need of help," the nurse asked formally. "Destiny, for Adam Renders in room 4453." "Let me see if I may get her," the nurse continued, annoying Destiny more than ever. The nurse called fr her, and Dr. Redger appeared in a matter of minutes. "Destiny," she asked. Destiny pointed to her ear letting her know she couldn't hear. The Dr. started signing as well. "Why are you here? What's wrong," Dr. Redger asked. "In my dream, I saw Adam's spirit. And this may sound crazy, but the spirit said to me that I'm the only one that can save him. I don't know what it means but he told me to tell you guys," Destiny finally finished. Dr. R. turned to the nurse and started talking. "You don't think..." "It's impossible." "Double Check," Mrs. R. said as she finished. She looked at Destiny and said thank you. Destiny nodded and went to go see Adam.
"Destiny." Adam let out a sigh or relief. "I'm sorry," Destiny signed. Adam knew that her hearing was at a lost again. Adam apologized. "I never wanted you to get hurt. I didn't mean for you to, either. I just ~ it was an accident," Adam continued on as he started tearing up from one of his worst memories in his life. "I know. It's just... everything lately has do with taking in a lot and it's too much. Especially now, they didn't even think you were going to wake-up. That's what got me os angry. I couldn't stand not having you in my life anymore especially after everything that we've been through so far," Destiny explained back to him hesitating because the tragedy had her come to a hard time of remembering all of the ASL signs she knows. Adam clinched his hand to make a fist, closed his eyes, a bit his lip. Destiny could see tears were pouring out again. "Please," Destiny spoke. "Adam looked up. "I'm going to be... okay...," the was a long pause before his heartbeat went dead. Destiny screamed as the nurses came in and tried to bring him back to life. "He's in another coma. We are 95% sure he won't be okay if he ever comes out of it. We're sorry. A miracle would have to happen for him to be okay. Otherwise, he's going to be deaf permanently and he'll have to get a bionic leg - one like Destiny's," the nurse finished her long statement. Mrs. Renders turned around and signed what the nurse said. Destiny got out of her wheelchair and walked away. She walked down the street to the breakfast house. She sat on the bench out front. "What's the probability of him making it out of the coma," Mrs. Renders asked hoping she could give Destiny good news for once. "Maybe a 45% chance he would. This was a pretty big accident though. The chips of glass are cutting into his throat and stomach. It's triggering something in the brain. We wanted to get a CAT scan - but right now isn't the best time," the nurse finished. She walked out of the room. Mrs. Renders sat down and cried. Destiny came back later. "I got you some pancakes, eggs, and hash-browns. I thought you might like some real food." "You didn't have to pay for me," Mrs. Renders said. "I wanted to. Especially after Adam, you deserve at least that," Destiny finished. Mrs. Renders thanked Destiny as she took the styrafoam box and opened it up to smell the freshly baked food. Mrs. Renders got up and left to go eat in the cafeteria. Destiny looked at Adam. Destiny thought to herself, "This can't be happening. Adam has to live. I love him, he can't just be gone like this. No ~ it's... No. God, please." Destiny go out of her wheelchair and placed it against the window. She sat in the chair beside Adam's bed, She took his hand and whispered so it was as if she was talking to just Adam, "As long as you're in pain... I'll be, too. I won't use medications or my wheelchair until your better and strong enough. I won't let you go. I won't... I can't," Destiny said trying not to cry too much. Destiny turned around to see if Mrs. Renders was in her sight at all. Destiny saw her birth father once again. He placed an envelope on the counter and left without a trace. Destiny held her breath as the doctors rejoiced. Destiny looked at them and a nurse came in and said enough money was left by the kindest soul to help Adam recover as best as they'd be able to. Destiny's jaw dropped as the nurse brought in Hope for Destiny. "We found her. After the car crash, we found her wandering around looking for you. She has a broken paw. Besides that, she'll be fine," Dr. Red handed Destiny the squirming little pup over to her. Destiny put her lightly down next to Adam. Hope licked Adam then layed down next to him. Destiny saw Adam's arm move over the puppy to secure it and make sure she didn't fall off. Destiny smiled. Destiny then realized Adam's okay and alive. "Adam," Destiny shouted joyfully. Adam opened his eyes and smiled. "You're going to make it," Destiny sighed with relief. © 2012 Lyghea |
