Wife of a Warrior

Wife of a Warrior

A Poem by Tiffany Thomas

This is in honor of all the soldiers who didn't get to come home.

Wife of a Warrior

I remember the day you moved next to me,

We were both so young.

I remember looking out the window to see,

A boy who was fidgeting with a bear and singing a song

Years went by and we grew fond

I remember when you asked me to the formal

And I remember our first kiss by the pond.

Barely an adult, you received the call.

A man with a gun and steed

Didn’t suit you so well

It wasn’t til the day you took your leave

That my heart understood and began to swell

You wrote letters every week

And I waited for them eagerly

The combat was ‘fierce’ and ‘mean’

Still you promised to come home to me

I remember the day,

The one when no mail came.

I waited a couple days, then a few more.

I remember when everything changed.

It happened when a fellow soldier knocked on my door.

It took a long time

To pick up the pieces that shattered,

The pieces of my life

It wasn’t for years that I remembered laughter

I still visit your gravestone

Even as I’m gray and withered away

I’ve lived a life that seemed alone

As I lay my head now, I close my eyes and say

“This battle has been ‘fierce’ and ‘mean’,

But I’m coming home to you, my sweet.”

This poem showcases the personal loss and the psychological sufferings the family of the soldiers suffer on their death.Loved it.

Wow that was.. :'( That's actually pretty relevant here in the Philippines right now. And those last two lines. I like how you turned them around and used them with the voice of the girl/ old woman when before it was the soldier. Great job! :)

Thank you! :) And those last two lines were my favorite part: Sort of a bitter/sweet ending.
