I sleep with my
top hat on these days.
It keeps the rabbits from
crawling out and running
away.

They are the safest close to
my brain when I sleep.
I don't want them eaten by
feral swine or to wander
off and drowned in a vat of wine.

The magic show will
start soon, and I'll pull them
out when least expected.
The crowd will gasp and groan
when I saw the woman in half.

"It's just a trick,"  I yell.
"She's okay, sleight of hand...see."

They know better, the blood
isn't fake.
They see the horror of the
magician's life, even though
it entertains. We all wish it
was an illusion, but it's
showtime.

Really Excellent Thomas how you extend the metaphor and develop it. I used to do card tricks and read The Tarot for Cash in my young wild days. A very serious business magic when you look into it more deeply. You handle this subject with assurance. Exceptional ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Btw I do not recommend The Tarot. The Cards date from the Middle Ages and they can be weirdly accurate and powerful. I gave up Tarot Readings before they gave me up.

A very well written piece about circus life ....it can be an unhappy affair as you describe it...many things go wrong...i like the way you protected your rabbits from a feral swine...keep them close...the ending seems haunting...does the rabbit really get killed? you bring this magician to life with your perfect words
