Why do some people
worry so much about the outside? Clean car, clean dishes, clean toilet, clean face, clean little bill of health, clean credit rating, clean dog, clean teeth, clean floor? What about the inside? The heart, the soul, the conscience?
Hey, no. I’m busy cleaning, cleaning the carpet, the sink, the garden. For God’s sake what would the neighbors think?
I have to clean the tables, the ceilings, your fingernails, ears and crotch. And the bed that we copulate in, it’s all dirty. Dirty, dirty, dirty. and the mirror… just look at it.
A definitely relatable theme, Thomas. I have to do my fair share of cleaning but not to the kind of level that makes one obsessive compulsive. Though, you won’t find me cleaning a crotch! That is strictly off limits!
On a personal level, it’s perfectly fine to scrub up well but being clean on the inside and a beacon for truth on the outside is more important. And let’s face it…..there are a lot clowns out there that aren’t just dirty and need a good clean; they are absolutely rotten and beyond all help.
I very much enjoyed your poem, Thomas. It keeps its roots in the realities of our lives but damn……I had to wade through so much outside of your page dribble just to get in here and read! ;)
A very striking subject in this sublime write, Thomas. It is so true that we devote our time and energy to the cleanliness of the physical world and we are inclined to forget about spiritually cleaning our inner world. Perhaps we forget about spiritually cleansing ourselves because, unlike the outside, we are not really able to see the inside. What's inside is dictated by how we live our lives, how we treat other human beings, how we treat our animal/feathered friends, how we love and appreciate the blessings we enjoy, etc. The list is endless really, Thomas. I love this poem very much. Our consciousness is the cleanser, the soap and water for our heart, mind and spirit and we should use it on a daily basis to judge when the cleaning ritual needs to take place. A very effectively penned poem, Thomas. Lovely work! Thank you for sharing...

Exactly. I could not agree more. Thank you so much, Marie.
you can't see what's on the inside, only what's outside. what about what the big man upstairs neighbor thinks? you can't order soul cleaner on amazon. brutal irony in that mirror.

Exactly. Thanks for getting it and commenting. I appreciate you.
Some things are simply matters of healthy personal hygiene but I understand the comparison. While we may work to be socially presentable I believe we should also dedicate twice as much effort to improving our character; our mentality and spirituality. From a holistic health perspective it would seem a grievous error to clean the outside of the cup and leave the inside dirty. Our diets can help us live longer, fuller lives or destroy our health and kill us off at a young age, depending on the things we put inside our bodies. To me, feeding the spirit and mind are no different.
Your words should be studied and studied again, Thomas. Not sure that everyone knows what clean really means. Ignore the outside, forget whatever rots inside? Knocking the world and its people for whatever purpose? Guess that's why you allude to cleaning the inside: perhaps, who knows, for power? It's all so very sad and pointless, such a waste of life. Perhaps we should all come clean and admit to our faults through and through? Many thanks, Thomas - you know how.
There is a process that begins with our first breath and continues until we draw our last .. the world has become so fixated on cleanliness that it dare not consider it's polar opposite without some kind of melt down occurring .. this seems to happen not only on an individual basis but has infected and contaminated whole nations and continents .. you just happen to have writ about it that begs further analysis and the search for a more concrete answer than the reflex that takes place when the drive for clarity is felt deep down where the dirt is deeply ingrained .. Sometimes we worry about the outside and forget the inside needs dusting too. I try to be a decent person and not worry about the outside as much but damn that mirror shines enough to see the forehead wrinkles lol
You make such an impact here, Thomas. It's the purity of soul and heart that should override the other cleanliness concerns. Perhaps, we get obsessed with cleanliness when we seem to lose control on other aspects of our life? This was such a thought provoking poem, straight from the gut!
