In a Battle Without a Shield

In a Battle Without a Shield

A Poem by Thomas W Case
"

Check out my recent book, Seedy Town Blues, available on Amazon.

"
It doesn't seem like
Christmas.
Mom and Dad are gone,
the kids are grown; There's no
snow on the ground, and
I'm in the psych ward again.
There is a dead dog loneliness
about the place.
All the patients are asleep,
and it's too early to get
my medicine.
Coffee has replaced
vodka in my diet, and
I feel like I'm in a
battle without a shield.
Even the pen I wield
isn't as sharp as it
used to be.

Oh my God, how we crave medicine, vodka or a haze of words to shield us from that dead dog nothingness of the mind! A stunning line, Thomas.

"There is a dead dog loneliness
about the place."

I love your poetry for the simple yet profoundly touching way in which you state a truth.
Keep sharing!

Thank you so much for the comment and read.
You have really set a sad but visual scene here, Thomas. Nothing lights your fire, nothing smiles you into what should be a happy time. For sure, this might not be joyful but - you write so emotionally.
