The Cages

The Cages

A Poem by Thomas W Case
"

Nobody likes a cage.

"
In a dream,
I see the raven
fly into the night;
his dark song beckoning
from his beak.
Shiny black wings promise
flight,
but to where?

I watch as the
pair of doves bellow
their songs of love
and with a rush of
angels wings
fly heavenward.

I hear the
bluebirds and
sparrows little hum of
hope fade softly into
the afternoon sun,
and I wonder,
what does it all mean?

Then I see them, and
many other kinds of
birds, with beautiful bright
colors,
Parakeets and parrots,
eagles and herons...even
a dodo and they are
all rotting in cages.
Some of the cages are
open,
others are closed,
but all the birds are
lying on their sides,
sad dead eyes,
staring blankly,
finished and flightless.
and I get it.

There are those who make their own cages from which there is no escape .. while others are too afraid to leave them, even with the door unlocked .. I think there is far more depth to these here words than might immediately meet the eye .. Neville

Life was never meant to be caged for any creature especially birds with wings to lift them.
King or poor man cannot thrive on bread alone , the nourishment to grow comes from free thinking and liberty...when the soul is starved the body dies too...

Birds are gifted wings so they fly. A caged bird will die without its freedom. So much depth in this write Thomas.

Thank you so much.
loss of liberty. Stuffed and on display. Neither of which is worth living for. A poem with power and a sense of the macabre. Good write Thomas

Thank you so much for reading and commenting.
we must be free or we die....much like the motto of New Hampshire.

even if we fly with dark wings like the raven...we must be able to fly if we want or need to.

People can rot, too.

I think I will know this feeling very soon.

Dear Thomas,
This is such a thoughtful write. Birds are close to nature and meant for flight. They are in essence the spirit of Nature. I think, birdsounds mean the universe. They have a surreal and haunting quality to them. SO powerful and healing. I want to go out with birdsong around me.
Cages of course are damning. Both actually and metaphorically. The spirit wants to fly free and so do birds.
Loved this poem!

Birds, colors, and message...
Some cages are open and some are closed -
This line brings many sighs of life.
Beautiful write!
