That first-morning swig washes away the stain on the inside; the parade of hearses and the lovers lost to the carnival of life. A few more swallows and memory becomes nebulous. Cumulus clouds form in the brain, and the thoughts float by, all fluffy, like cotton candy, and fun-house safe. In this twisted mirror I see the tired eyes of a clown who's not funny anymore; just a ragged costume and a jagged soul that is hungry for sleep and dreams, a moment's reprieve.

It's not that stereotypes are wrong - that's why there ARE stereotypes - because it seems 'everyone' has seen it (whatever that 'it' may be) somewhere, somewhen and thereafter assumes... but in listening and observing a bit more you come to realize each person has their own reasons and needs and justifications for their actions/reactions to past, present, and future 'moments'. This one did not disturb me - I wanted to listen, but ...
Yes, the pains and losses of life do tend to pile up after a while, and a need to escape them can arise. Still, be careful of those early morning swigs. They could be a sign that things are getting out of hand.
Such a time reminds us why life is worth living, and why we live on, a short painful reflection that fuels our spirit. I love the imagery that has been used here about floating thoughts, though in my experience, thoughts can be more than just cotton candy, perhaps pop-candies, those crunchy bites with explosive tastes that take over all corners of your mouth and mind before you even let them. Such thoughts, are worrying to say the least, but they keep the heart beating.
Regardless, thank you for your work, author Thomas W Case, an enjoyable read with many shaded emotions coloring it.
The carnival of life... a fine phrase...but not so wonderful; life has it's ups and downs and at any specific moment one can look at life in indifferent ways...including looking back as well...clowns usually put on happy faces. but beneath that face is sorrow, which forces us to look at life in yet a different way...we each have our own way at looking at life and that can change from day to day....
Warmly, B

Isnt that what we are looking for Thomas, a moments reprieve to remind us that life has a meaning, no matter what we think it is and no matter what path we find ourselves on, sleep and other moments of reprieve, we are all looking for something to make our life mske a bit more sense to us.
Very well captured.
