Spotlight

A Poem by Thomas Kainaroi

The spotlight jumps to
My attention as I hang upon the flagpole
For all to see.

The audience sings
The Alma Mater and I stand alone
In that lonely family circle.

All hail to thee.
Oh, how my colors show.

Watchful eyes,
Inglorious and bright.

Every weight stacked
Upon one after the other.
Each delight missed
As a whispered song in summer.

The night grows cold,
The stadium engulfs me further.

Look at this display.
Observe as each feather falls
To the ground,
For all of them to take.

I'm dead,
I'm awake.
I'm alive,
I'm asleep.

I am your model,
Your posable doll.

Hit me and I'll take it,
And I'll take it again.

I'll scream,
But you won't hear a sound.
