Last Snow

Last Snow

A Poem by Sarah Marie

The last winter covered the earth
In a blanket of white, shining crystal
Which could be seen with the naked eye
For miles and miles in every direction.
At first it was received joyously by the children,
Grudgingly by the farmers,
Gratefully by the artists sketching its beauty.
Birds were rarely seen, and little creatures
Hid away from the cold until spring.
Yet spring never came-their months continued,
Though the biting chill could not be contained.
Frosts hid the dead grass, the burrows
Of snow white rabbits not wishing to be blend in
With the world. For all the world knew snow.
The oceans froze as ice, little fish never again being seen.
The ice became bridges for nations, and soon
Everything from immigrants to penguins were found
On every continent. People grew closer,
And more families were formed with children
Who had never before known temperatures
Higher than freezing. Yet soon the world became too cold.
Too cold to sleep, to work, to breathe in
The crisp air which violated even the most covered skin.
There seemed to be no escape.
The wildlife withered away with the eternal breeze.
The sick died from mere colds,
And tears became icicles before reaching the ground.
The last snow was the final hope of survival
As this last winter took each life in the coldest, quietest night.
