Seven Deadly Sins

Seven Deadly Sins

A Poem by Sarah Marie

Last night I was awakened by the seven deadly sins-
They turned on the lights and pulled me out of bed,
A great struggle with Sloth at my side. Finally I was dressed,
Pride overseeing their work-for my appearance
Meant the world and he worried what might be said
Had I walked outside without my finery.
I walked the streets and was by far the best dressed,
The midnight's moon illuminating my jewels;
Yet they were not enough-I wanted to shine
Like one of the stars above and the night sky rule-
Greed pointed out what I was missing
And Envy pointed out a girl who wore just what I needed.
She was not alone-I noticed instantly the man at her hip;
He was handsome and dark, his stare piercing as I walked up
To his beautiful wife; both were stunned as I ripped the choker
From her neck and replaced it around my own and grinned.
He took a step toward me, her love did, and I found Lust on my shoulder-
I found Gluttony at my side wanting to be filled by her husband's lips.
Her anger was great, but my Wrath was greater as she screamed as I become bolder.
I took both their rings and threw them to the side,
The woman in shock and cursing her man in my grasp;
He had no need for any other accessory now that he had lost his bride.
I pushed him away for a moment and looked at her once more,
Pushing her after the rings before stealing her clasp.
I took him home to meet several friends,
And they got along better than I could have imagined-
Pride straightened his collar, and Lust returned his eyes to me;
Greed pushed me to the side so that no longer I could take up all the bed.
First it was I then food then drink to fill his Gluttony,
His Wrath raging because I had not been enough,
His Envy overwhelming because he alone had been my fill,
The beautiful woman's husband did not know to whom to first listen
As seven devils strained and broke the remnants of his will.
All acted as One, and I become afraid,
For first he kissed then he slapped, then he whistled and then he laughed-
My friends were now only his, and all I could do was pray.
My vain attempt was quickly discovered as his Wrath demanded my final cry-
My head was pounding and I became painfully still.
Sloth returned to the man and at my bleeding side he suddenly lay and shut his eyes.
With the seven friendly devils I died.
