FateA Poem by Sarah MarieI think the concept of fate is both accepted and denied for various reasons...It is a very interesting idea. This is my take on the general view of fate-not necessarily my own.Fate Is a lonely mistress; How one can call herself so Must be empowering- Frightening. To hold the lives of countless Innocents in the palm of one’s hand- Only a fool would choose this, Choose watching others lead lives And knowing the same for oneself Would never be possible. Fate is a wicked mistress. How she thinks she can decide What is right for me and what is best- Do I have no say in the short years, In the precious moments that pass by In the blink of a teary eye? What about my longings and my dreams- Do they even matter? I dare not ask if she could cease, For I know better than to tempt fate. I often wonder if the paths I have chosen And continue to choose each day Were paths constructed by my own design, Roads I alone decided to travel; Is there any hope-any chance at all That the steps I take were not predestined? Even those who believe in this she-demon Are not safe; rather, they are plagued To understand why things are as they are, To know fighting is futile and protest is prohibited. Fate is a cruel mistress indeed, Yet there are times I find myself wondering, Even thanking her for the good things in my life; Whether I am one to believe in destiny or not, I do know the results-the relief or joy or pain felt Every day in response to every choice. My mien is made by how I have reacted- Though I do not wish to relive it, I must thank Every minute of doubt and sadness and suffering, Heartache, and the bitter taste of betrayal, Opportunities to forgive, forsake, or walk away- Fate is a curious mistress I dread to meet.
