When Love Is Left

When Love Is Left

A Poem by Sarah Marie

The ground trembles
Underneath their running feet;
It shivers as it hears
The vibrant, drumming beat
Of a separated lover’s heart.
One can hear its mad pounding,
One can feel the desperation
From the way it is pitifully sounding,
Crying to find its lost love.
The heart knows no other song,
Praying the lost will not be gone for long.
The sky sends rain down to the earth,
Its tears of sadness for this lonely heart;
Then clouds clear a path to the sun,
Lighting the way so that
The lovers will not be apart
For a moment more.
The whole world feels its aching,
The grass and clay quaking
In response to the pleading way
One lonely heart cannot help but pray-
Yet the heart does not realize,
For this heart is about to die
If its true love cannot be found.
When love is gone,
There is nothing more to do
Than vainly steady oneself
Upon the quivering ground.
