War in My HeartA Poem by Sarah MarieDon’t you go, And don’t you die; Don’t leave me here Alone to cry. Have a heart And think of mine- Are our souls No longer entwined? Where is the love, Where is the hope That one day You will come home? I cannot ignore, And I cannot pretend I do not think You will leave me for Heaven. Please be safe, And please come back soon; Your absence Is my dread and doom. War cannot keep you, For you do not belong Anywhere but in my hold So warm, close, and strong. Madness cannot have you, For you are gentle and calm; I feel as if your heart Will soon leap out my palm And join the rest of you- Don’t let it be in a grave; For you to return safely Is all I know to pray.
