Innocent

Innocent

A Poem by Sarah Marie

Innocence, gentle cage

From what is displayed,

Lust and pain and rage

Upon your mind will prey

Until your body follows

And crumbles to the ground-

Hearts are snatched, minds swallowed

By the echoes of sinful sounds

In a world desiring to touch,

Desiring to steal what is hidden-

They say it will not hurt much,

But realize what will be given

If innocence cannot withstand.

The world is the captor of souls

Of all-every man and woman;

Without innocence, where is good

And where is the hope and trust

That all the wanting world should

Have, all that it must

In order to survive a single day.

If innocence lives as even a sliver,

One can resist and not stray,

One does not need to quiver;

Innocence-

Sweet, precious thing-

It lessens an influence-

Such a necessary thing-

And desires are tamed.

When innocence is lost,

One can never be the same-

What a cost.
