Blackbeard's Lover

Blackbeard's Lover

A Poem by Sarah Marie

They called him the devil,

Evil in the form of a man;

I cannot say if this is true,

For I knew him only on land.

He visited only once,

The Carolinas grand and great

Compared to me; I still believe

Our meeting was but the cause of fate.

He was a man of many talents-

He knew how to fight, scare, and govern;

All the experienced women waited in line,

Fantasizing about what they could learn

From the master of all, Edward Teach,

A legend of land and king of the sea.

I suppose he did not favor their goods or tone,

For then he looked at me.

His eyes scanned over me, and I was afraid,

Wondering what he could want me for;

I was not as pretty or bold as the others,

But I realized he wanted more than a w***e.

He stared longingly and gestured for me;

I took notice and on his lap sat-

He winked and grinned broadly at me

Then placed on my head his pirate hat.

“Lovely girl, why do thee hide?

Ye presence is all I kindly beseech-

Ye make me smile and forget all others-“

These were the words of Edward Teach.

He took me by the hand and smirked,

Leading me to a room with my hand in his own;

I heard the whistles and cries of his crew,

Wondering if they in turn would hear my moans.

My attention fell from his eyes to the fire

Which slowly burned the ends of his braids;

He found my play amusing indeed,

Waiting long before on the bed I was laid.

I ran my hands through his hair,

The color as black as a winter’s night;

Most knew of his wrath and blade,

Though few knew of his growl and bite.

He loved me quickly then he loved me slowly,

Careful to listen to all my wails;

Never before had I a pirate, so cried,

“Steer my helm, hoist my sails!”

I pleaded for him to make me his wife,

Careless of which number I would be;

He shook his head and denied my request,

Preferring I belong to none but me.

We loved until morning and reluctantly dressed-

I watched with sadness as he set sail;

His death came before his next visit-

I pray to know him again in Hell.

I loved it, such a sad ending though, but that's what makes it awesome

You've done a great job here. The rhymes were a bit inconsistent in your second section witch through me off a bit. But the story I'm sure took a long time to create and it shows. People tend to shy away from the longer poems but I'm glad I didn't. It was very entertaining.
