Diary of an Insomniac

Diary of an Insomniac

A Poem by Wildwood Fox

I try so hard to close my eyes to fall asleep and dream something sweet.

But I can't.

I lie here awake tossing and turning trying to fall asleep.

But I can't.

I lie still, staring into the black empty space around me, hopingthatmyheartwillstopbeatingsofastandmymindwillstopthinking.

But it won't.

Back to tossing and turning and trying in vain to find peace.

But I can't

Then the pens and needles come. Pricking at my feet and fingers. I move them to make the pricking stop.

But it won't

I close my eyes again and listen in the silence, I hear the clock ticking in the corner.

Tick Tock,
 tick tock,
TICKTOCKTICKTOCK !
TICKTOCKTICKTOCKTICKTOCK!

I wonder how long I've been awake as the clock gets louder.

I hope it will stop,

But it won't,

Author's Note

Wildwood Fox
The words running together in the 6th line is to give the words a feeling of being rushed out, almost like yelling but more panicked. The words tick tock running together in the 16th and 17th lines are to make it feel like the ticking is not only getting louder but is speeding up.

I myself do not suffer from insomnia, but this is how I imagine it feels. This the state I often find myself in when sleep eludes me. I do hope you enjoy this piece and an criticism no matter how harsh would be welcome.

Thank you.

It is a true representation of not being able to sleep and how truly frustrating it is. I have cried in desperation hoping to send myself to sleep through pure exhaustion, but it never works. Well done :)
