Her eyes drifted to a space pass the glass windows where the pinpoints of silver created consalations in the night sky. She caught herself absetly playing with the electric blue, feathered ear rings she was in the process of taking out in her nightly preperation for bed. She began to wonder what thoughts had distracted her from her routine but couldn't put her fingure on it, she had probably been flying over mountain ranges and seas, mapping journys she wanted to take. The earings had managed to progress out of her ears and onto the table infront of her. She caught her reflection in the mirror which she had propped up to one side and smiled at herself. She watched her blue eyes gaze back at her and flicked a strand of dark hair back into it's position out of her face. She enjoyed the silence which was surrounding her. There was a time when she would have reached for music to fill the quietness but now silence was just as welcome as sound. Expertly she pushed back from the table, which she used as a desk as well as a dressing area, with one hand so that her wheelchair turned nintey degrees allowing her to face her bed where the tshirt and shorts she wore to sleep in lay in a bundle.
"Zoe, you need a hand?" Liam's soft voice asked from the door. She looked at him wondering if he needed her to say yes tonight. His doe eyes watched her, a smile making his face match his soft eyes.
"No, I'm OK. Think I'll manage tonight" she answered knowing that today he would be OK just talking to her from the door, pretending not to be watching her protectivly incase she got into trouble with her nightly preperations.
"What did you get up to today?" she asked deciding to tackle the easy top change first and reaching for the green tshirt.
"Spent most of the day in the library trying to get the last bit of research done for this assignment I have to do next week" Liam said enphisising the word library. She laughed as she unzipped the top she was wearing, shrugged it off then pulled on the tshirt in her hand.
"That must be, what, the fourth time you've been in the library since you've started uni. You better be careful incase people start thinking your smart or something!"
She took a deep breath lifted herself out of her chair and onto the bed, using her arms to support her weight and making sure her immobile legs moved with the rest of her. She could sense Liam stiffen as she did so but he managed to keep his voice light with a comment about him not having to worry about looking smart with a friend like her. She arranged her legs out on the bed infront of her then lay back undoing her jeans.
"What do you have to do for the assignement again? Something about the progression of the AIDs virus?" She knew exactly what the assignement was about but needed something to keep him distracted while she worked the jeans down her legs, using her hands to lift her legs at the knees so she could continue the laborious process of working the stubbern material over her unfeeling knees. Eventually she began the much simpler process of pulling the shorts up, rocking from side to side to get them over her bum. Momenteraly her mind skipped to how greatful she was that she had only lost feeling from the top of her thighs down and not any higher or her life would have been a hundred times more difficult, and messy.
Once she had finished getting changed Liam made his way to the bottom of her bed and sat by her feet. Taking one leg at a time he began exercising them in a steady rythem.
"It's actually really interesting seeing how the virus has evolved over the years" Liam concluded as he rotated Zoe's right ankle and she watched still feeling the surreal disconnection between the knowledge that it was her foot he was manipulating and the lack of feeling.
