Liberty Weekend

A Story by Ralph S. DeMarco

A page of random prose from an old journal.

Yesterday was the Fourth of July, working at an amusement park all night and had no chance to wave the flag or ignite some gunpowder. Some passengers weren't sure if the huge orange red disk was the sun or the moon. But I knew. An elderly man from Brazil explained to me that AIDS is a plague from God to teach the sodomites that to disobey His word will result in death. He wore a Special Forces t-shirt and the tattoo on his arm said; Give us your hearts & minds or we'll burn your huts down. He was a Roman Catholic and thought nothing of those with the virus who aren't homosexuals and was not perplexed to know that St. Francis used to kiss the wounds of lepers. An old black woman told me to that she thought it would be great if Africa were free, then all those black folks who wish to leave America could go back. I had to remind her that maybe we should all go back since we're all originally from Africa. She liked the idea but added that nobody believed it, and that's why Marcus Garvey was stopped.
