CHAPTER 7

Andrea turned the corner near Alicia’s house and ran straight into Lucas. “What are you doing back here?” he snapped. “I told you to take her to safety.”

“Do you see her?” Andrea snapped. “She is safe and my mom told me to come get you.”

“Your mom being who exactly?”

“Kay,” she said simply and saw alarm pass off Lucas’s face.

“You told Kay?”

“Didn’t exactly have a choice. Now come on, she wants to see you.” She grabbed his arm before he could take off and they disappeared in a flash of light.

“You little brat!” Lucas exclaimed as they quit moving and his feet hit the floor.

“I will thank you to not call my child a brat again,” Kay spoke softly, but the authority in her voice was clear.

Lucas turned slowly, facing Kay had to be the hardest thing he had done in a long time. “Kay,” he forced a grin. “You look as beautiful as you did before.”

“Stop trying to sweet talk me Lucas.”

He winced. “Yes ma’am.”

Kay shook her head. “So you are a vampire now?”

He nodded slowly. “Ma’am, I would never hurt any of the witch bloodline. I prefer not to hurt anyone…but I have no had much of a choice.”

Kay crossed her arms. “You swear to me right now that you will never try to harm anyone in this coven.”

“Kay, I swear to you by my blood, that I will never hurt anyone from this coven. I may be a vampire now, but I still know who my true family.”

Kay slowly relaxed as she looked around the room. “Please take a seat Luc…”

“You jerk!” a voice exclaimed from the doorway, Lucas turned just as Alicia slapped him with all of her strength.

“I deserved that…” he muttered.

“You punch me…you knocked me out!”

“For your safety.”

She raised her hand to slap him again, but Kay grabbed her hand. “Enough Alicia,” she murmured.

Alicia jerked her hand away and walked to the table.

“Lucas, what will they do to get to Alicia?” Kay asked softly and grimaced at his words.

“They will kill anyone in their path. They want her power.”

“Then we will protect her at all cost,” Andrea spoke stepping up to her mother. Kay nodded in agreement and looked over at Alicia. “I swore to Samantha to protect her daughter, and I will do that,” Kay spoke.

Alicia stood slowly and looked at small group. “I don’t need anyone to protect me. I can do that myself.”

“Alicia stop being such a child,” Kay spoke, finally annoyed with Alicia’s stubbornness. “Lucas, since you promise not to hurt any members of the coven, you will watch over Alicia.”

“What?” both of them exclaimed.

“No way!” Alicia said.

“I will not watch over the brat, she is likely to get us both killed!”

“I am not a brat!”

Lucas rolled his eyes. “Kay, you want her alive, then keep her locked in a room.”

“Enough you two,” Kay spoke softly. “Lucas, you will be her bodyguard. Now Alicia, you are scared and mad and you have every right to be. But we all want to help you, and until this is ended you need to be protected.”

“I don’t need…”

“Yes sweetie, you do,” Kay said walking to her. “I promised Samantha I would keep you safe, and I will never break that promise.” Her voice broke and she looked away. “Listen to me Alicia, please. Lucas knows what these creatures will do to get you.”

“Hey! We are not creatures,” Lucas muttered and looked at Kay. She raised her eye brows. “Technically, you are.”

Lucas rolled his eyes an sighed. “Fine we are creatures, but I can’t exactly protect her on my own. My Master will find us, and the minute I try to used magic against him, I’ll be killed.”

“You’re connected,” Andrea stated and at his nod she turned to her mother. “The reading I did says that if a vampire tries to harm his master, the vampire will get double the pain.”

“And what if we were to attack him?” Kay asked.

“Then it wont hurt me. Only if I try to hurt him.”

Kay turned away from the group silently and walked to the far side of the room. Her skirts seemed to flow and then Alicia saw that Kay wasn’t walking, she was floating. She continued across the room until she arrived at the open windows. “Your vampire friends wont be able to get in here unless someone breaks the wards.” She turned and glared at Lucas. She then turned back to the window, her thoughts seemingly elsewhere.

“Mom?” Andrea glanced around the room before walking to her mom. “Mom, your scaring me.”

Alicia looked at Andrea seeing the fear in her eyes. So she wasn’t the only one feeling the energy radiating off of Kay. Alicia glanced at Lucas who seemed very tense. “Kay please stop…” he said slowly and Kay turned to face him.

“Oh…I’m sorry Lucas, I was not thinking that the energy would hurt you.”

“Well…it does usually hurt vampires, and unfortunately I am one,” he said through gritted teeth. He turned on his heel and walked out of the great hall.

Kay looked from Andrea to Alicia and then sighed. “Making him mad is probably not the smartest thing I have ever done.” The girls nodded in agreement as they turned to look the way he went.

“I’ll go after him,” Alicia said softly and took off after him. She stopped halfway down the hall realizing his footsteps had stopped. “Lucas?” she said slowly as she glanced around. “Where did you go?” Silence answered her and she walked farther down the hall. She got to the backdoor and opened it slowly, her eyes darted from side to side as she looked for Lucas. She stepped outside, and tensed when she heard a slightly sound, almost like a chirp, seconds before a body hit hers knocking her to the ground. She rolled quickly, not wanting him to land on her. She jumped to her feet and turned to face her attacker.

Lucas looked at her and grinned. “Not bad, for a new witch,” he chuckled.

She rolled her eyes. “You need to go back inside. Kay didn’t mean to…”

“To make me seem like the bad guy?” Lucas scoffed.

“Lucas…if you don’t want to be here then please walk away. But you wanted to protect me for a reason, so I’m asking you, as Samantha’s daughter, please stay and help.”
