Eyes Cast DownA Poem by THERISAKnow you want to ask me
A question
Many would consider
Taboo and personal subject
But unsure how to do so
As if society is
Following the US military's policy Of "don't ask don't tell".
Scared of learning Why i avoid your glaze
Or never ask your name.
My eyes wander
Observing everything in the room
Although i value and trust our relationship
Except on this matter
Thinking of my past
Fills me
With fear and self-anger
Of being an abuse victim.
Even now
Years after the fact
And countless counselling sessions
Yet still struggling
Attempting to break the cycle.
To make eye contact Means to stand out
Drawing attention to myself
In the past
This meant placing a target
Around my body and soul.
Else
Never asking your name
Often until several months have past
Before i felt able to .
Please don not feel
I am disrespecting you
Rather a survival tool
Now out of date
But unable to discard
Unto the junk pile
Where it safely belongs. © 2010 THERISAAuthor's Note
