Looking DownwardsA Poem by therisa
I look down
At my hands Seeing a future Once filled with hopes And dreams Of a richer tomorrow. Instead Arthritic gnarled knuckles Stare back at me Marking a lifetime Of “might-have been’s”. Dreams turned Into ashes When exposed To the harsh light Of reality. Often wonder Why I bother To continue In this struggle Of mine. Given the dashed hopes And broken promises Of a lifetime Spent battling against The system. Never measuring up To my expectations Always falling way short. Original square peg In a round hole. © 2011 therisaAuthor's Note
