Unspoken Reality

Unspoken Reality

A Chapter by therisa
"

What I wanted to say, to my mom, during a recent phone call.

"
Parents want to believe
Their children can approach
Whenever
They have an issue
Bothering them.

Yet in reality
It is a far different story
Where silent is the rule
Not the exception
As parents hope for.

Especially
When its an issue
They are struggling
To find the exact words
In describing the depth
Of the inner turmoil
Regarding
Their gender identity.

While
Forced to endure bullying
Whether physical
Or verbal violence
From other students
On the schoolyard.

They learned the hard way
What happens
When they report
These abuses to a teacher
Or a parent.

Often creates more abuse
Happening off school grounds
Thus forced to keep
A quiet tongue
In the hope their abusers
Will become tired
Of picking upon them.

How does a child
Approach their parents
When in the past
They were told
To suck it
And not be so emotional?

Especially
When dealing with topic matters
As emotional as bullying
And one’s gender orientation.

Both tough issues
Without the additional
Pressure of puberty
On top of this
Which many parents
Do not understand.

These pent up emotions
Have only one release
Which for many kids
Is to seek out
Alternative escape ways
Like illegal drugs
Alcohol cutting
Or the final solution
Suicide.

It's a very difficult position to be in, knowing you don't really have anyone to turn to.
